Music
At Beck, our aim is to provide a music curriculum which will enable each child to reach their full potential in music, encourage children to enjoy singing, composing and performing and provide children with the opportunity to perform in front of an audience both within and outside school. It has been well documented that music and the arts are extremely beneficial in promoting well-being and a positive attitude to learning. We want our music to support the children’s healthy social development, a sense of discipline and their musical curiosity.
We aim for our pupils to appreciate and respect a wide range of musical traditions and genres. Through their participation in music-making we want our children to focus on and improve their listening and recall skills, improve their creative vocabulary and boost their cultural capital. We want them to listen, appreciate and communicate confidently using the emotional language of music.
Each term’s music making builds on prior language, skills and knowledge through a range of:
- Musical games and activities to develop a thorough understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music
- Performing activities to develop singing, exploring and playing instruments, improvising and composing
- Exposure to recorded and live music, as well as their own performances, to develop meaningful listening and appraising skills
At Beck our Music Teacher delivers small group specialist teaching for groups of up to three children in Guitar, Keyboard and Drums. Children take a series of internal ‘music exams’.
Additionally, Beck offers a range of music enrichment activities around the year, including weekly singing assemblies, a KS2 choir, KS1 Christmas Choir, Garageband club, Y6 brass band, guitar club and lunchtime drop ins (for children who want time to practise but who do not have access to instruments at home). These groups are encouraged to perform at regular intervals in school, and in their community, e.g. school performances, concerts in the community and singing at residential homes.
Beck has a strong relationship with Sheffield Music Hub and is committed to a whole year group (Y5) undertaking instrumental tuition on a pbuzz and cornet. This investment is continued into an afterschool brass club in year 6. Furthermore, Beck’s music teacher and Sheffield Music Hub work hard to gain continued funding to ensure pupils gain access to instrumental music making as they transition to secondary school through ‘Awards for Young Musicians’.
“To enable all children and young people to learn to sing, play an instrument and create music together, and have the opportunity to progress their musical interests, including professionally.“
