Welcome to Foundation Stage 1
We’re really excited to welcome you to our FS1 Nursery. Here you’ll find out more about what children learn about in FS1 and our FS1 team.
The Team
Miss Cooke – Nursery Leader
Miss Hopson – Nursery Teacher
Miss Addey, Mrs Kirk, Miss Elms and Miss Price
There are 3 topics in Foundation Stage 1 which underpin the learning each academic year. These topics are:
- Who Am I and Who Could Help Me? – Ourselves and People Who Help Us
- Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? – Traditional Stories
- Why Did Old MacDonald Have a Farm? Farm Animals and Produce
All topics are generated by a range of fiction and non-fiction books and the interests of the children which aim to extend and increase their range of vocabulary.
Alongside these topics children will also learn about the 4 seasons, seasonal changes and important festivals and celebrations which take place during the calendar year.
Children in Foundation Stage 1 follow the Read Write Inc Scheme during the Summer term which really helps them to make progress in their early literacy skills. You can find out more information about this on the Phonics and Early Reading page on our website.
Autumn Term - Who Am I and Who Could Help Me?
During the Autumn term children are learning to trust unfamiliar adults, build relationships, follow rules and boundaries and develop their communication skills. This topic focuses on Personal, Social and Emotional Development as well as the 2 other prime areas of the curriculum. Children will learn more about keeping safe and why we have rules in place.
This term children will also learn to share without adult support, follow instructions and take part in a conversation with others. They will begin to develop a sense of community and learn about roles and occupations within this community. Children will also begin to develop their early mark making skills and understand that writing is for a purpose. This purpose will be a trip to the local post office to post their postcards home.
Spring Term - Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? – Traditional Stories
During the Spring term the children will become immersed in a range of traditional stories which really benefits oracy and communication and language skills. Children learn to retell stories in the small world, make believe in the magical role play areas and take on their favourite character roles and phrases. This topic ends with an oral storytelling productions of some of their favourite traditional stories.
Summer Term - Why Did Old MacDonald Have a Farm? Farm Animals and Produce
During the Summer term and as the weather gets warmer the children will take on the pretend role of a farmer and experience a visit from a real farm. This topic explores farm animals and produce and children will use a variety of farm produce to make bread, pizzas and taste honeycomb. Children will learn the names of mother and baby farm animals and which products they produce. This final outcome will be a picnic with parents to take some of the products produced on a farm.
“Our vision is to provide an excellent primary education that gives our children the very best chance of succeeding in life.”
