Religious Education

At Beck we aim for our pupils to be tolerant and empathetic members of both school and wider society. Our RE curriculum equips children with a range of skills to allow them to understand different religions and the beliefs of others. Pupils will leave school with a clear understanding of the beliefs and practices of a range of religions worldwide and within the community of Sheffield.  Pupils will be able to articulate their own beliefs and will have developed speaking and listening skills during discussions.

In RE pupils learn from religions and world views about different ways of life in local, national and global contexts. They discover, explore and consider many different answers to questions about human identity, meaning and value. They learn to weigh up for themselves the value of wisdom from different communities, to disagree respectfully, to be reasonable in their responses to religions and world views and to respond by express insights into their own and others’ lives. They are encouraged to develop enquiring minds, and to think rigorously, creatively, imaginatively and respectfully about their ideas in relation to religions and world views.

The National Curriculum states the legal requirement that: “Every state-funded school must offer a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based, and which:

  • Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and
  • Prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.”

The RE curriculum at Beck is planned to fulfil requirements within the Sheffield SACRE.

In order to do this in a high quality way we have chosen to use Kapow RE Scheme.

Kapow Primary’s Religion and worldviews (R&W) scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to become curious, reflective and open-minded thinkers. The intention is for pupils to develop the confidence to ask meaningful questions, explore a range of beliefs and worldviews and reflect on their own values and those of others.

The scheme aims to raise awareness of how religion and worldviews influence individual lives, communities and cultures over time. Its goal is to encourage pupils to become respectful and thoughtful citizens who can engage with diversity and contribute positively to a pluralistic society.

The scheme supports teachers in developing their subject knowledge and confidence, enabling them to deliver engaging and inclusive lessons. The curriculum is designed to be both accessible and ambitious, ensuring that all pupils participate fully and achieve their potential.

The Kapow Religion and Worldview curriculum is organised under the following three key strands:

  • Substantive knowledge.
  • Disciplinary knowledge.
  • Personal knowledge.

Kapow Primary’s R&W curriculum has been planned with these strands running through each unit, ensuring balanced coverage of the different aspects of R&W and opportunities to develop both substantive and disciplinary understanding, alongside personal reflection.
