Science

Science is the study of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment, and at Beck, we want our science teaching to give all of our students a strong understanding of the world around them. Throughout their school journey, pupils will learn how to work scientifically which will enable them to better understand the scientific processes, concepts and knowledge outlined in the National Curriculum. Additional to this, we want our pupils to recognise the role that science has played in the development of the world they live in, and the role that it has in determining the future, for it is science that will find solutions for slowing down the negative impact of climate change; a way for astronauts to visit Mars; cures for illness; and so much more.

We want to support our pupils in their understanding of scientific vocabulary so that they become competent in the use of academic language and are successful in their science learning. In line with our school’s Core Values, we also want our pupils to broaden their understanding of science in the world around them through real life, authentic experiences that are exciting and memorable. Our commitment to teaching high-quality and

where possible practical science lessons will ensure that our pupils gain the knowledge and skills that they need to be successful in achieving the objectives outlined in the National Curriculum.

To help us deliver great Science teaching we use Snap Science: a high quality progressive curriculum written by experts.

By the end of key stage 2 we aspire for all of our pupils to have acquired the knowledge, concepts and skills outlined in the National Curriculum alongside a positive attitude and enjoyment towards the subject. We believe that science learning is progressive, and that our pupils should constantly build upon their previous knowledge and understanding of the subject both throughout and within their years at primary school. We also encourage our pupils to be inquisitive, and to make links in their learning between science and other subjects. At Beck, science is taught throughout each academic year, so that links can be made to other subjects and to themed learning wherever is possible. Also, in line with our whole school approach to the curriculum, in the spring term the themes taught across school have a science ‘driver’ which further enables our pupils to gain a wide range of scientific knowledge and skills. This approach will ensure that all areas of the science National Curriculum are taught effectively and consistently from foundation stage to year 6.

When our pupils leave Beck, our goal is that they are fully prepared to embark on the next stage of their school career and they are able to successfully access science learning during their time at secondary school. In addition to this, we want our pupils to develop a passion for science so that they are aware of, and are prepared for the possibilities of a future career in the subject. Our goal is to ensure that the science curriculum we provide gives our pupils the confidence and motivation to further develop their skills into the next stage of their education and beyond.
