Autumn Term: How is the world connected?

During the first term the children’s learning will focus on geography as they learn that different parts of the world produce different materials due to human and physical features. They will also learn about trade and develop an understanding that trade isn’t always fair and equal, specifically focusing on the importance of the Silk Road. During this term, the children will also develop their art skills through exploring Islamic patterns before designing a piece of artwork showing links around the world and holding an exhibition to showcase this.Year 5 – Parent Curriculum Newsletter, Term 1

Spring Term: How does the universe work?

During their second term in Year 5, the children’s learning will focus on science as they learn about the movement of the planets in the solar system including the Earth, sun and moon and the impact of these on Earth. The children will gain knowledge of how levers, pulleys, cams and other mechanisms affect the impact or direction of force exerted on an object. At the end of this term the children will use the knowledge they have gained to hold their very own science fair!

In the final part of the year, the children will enjoy learning about the Anglo Saxons and Vikings, exploring different aspects of life such as; art, law, writing, religion, and work. Later in the term the children will visit the Jorvik Centre to experience what life was like in a Viking village. To showcase their learning, the children will write their own legend stories, set in the Anglo-Saxon and Viking times before sharing their stories at a story-telling event!
